Central Park, an 850-acre rectangle of recreational land, is located in the very center of Manhattan Island amidst the surrounding array of high-rise buildings. In the summer, the New York Public Theater performs "Shakespeare in the Park". The Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic Symphony offer free performances in the park.
