Christmas Cliparts II

Information About Christmas

Christmas was called "Criste's Maesse" or "Christ's Mass".

No one knows when Jesus was born.

Jesus' birthday was not celebrated during his lifetime. However, when the Romans b
ecame Christians about 300 years later, they decided to abolish an old Pre-Christian festival called "SATURNALIA" and replace it with one celebrating the birth of Jesus. This took place on 25th December.

In 336 A.D, the first Christmas was celebrated in Rome.

In 1300, the Christians started putting words in everyday language to the carol t
unes that describe the Christmas story.

The name "Santa Claus" came from an Old Dutch word for "St. Nicholas". He lived in Turkey about 1500 years ago. He was one of the first bishops of the Christian Church. The Romans imprisoned him for a while because of his faith. Children loved him and he is the best remembered for his kindness towards children. One story says that he gave some gold to a poor father to save his three daughters from poverty and shame.
