Plants & Flowers Divider

Plants were the first living organisms to appear on this planet. Only plants are able to take up nutrients in the form of minerals and convert them into organic compounds which all animals can eat. Thus people, too, are in fact dependent on plants as the source of all food.

A flower is a very shortened stem whose leaves become transformed into reproductive organs. It usually has two main parts, the stamens and pistils, and a third part, the floral envelope, which protects the young flower and attracts insects for the purpose of pollination.

A plant takes food from its environment and increases its body mass. The plant body grows and its organs grow with it, changing their shape and chemistry: the plant develops.

During their individual lives plants change their metabolism, develop new functions, form new leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds. New plants sprout from the seeds to develop again and produce new seeds. Thus metabolism, supporting the growth and development of an individual, is also involved in the formation of the germs of new individuals of the same species, that is, in the continuing process of reproduction.
